Outreach - Bridging the Gap

OUTREACH TEAM Summer 2019

New Park School endeavours to reach every individual student, ensuring that they have access to a creative curriculum that stimulates them and helps overcome previous barriers to learning. The programme that is negotiated with the student and parents/carers builds on previous success, even if this means reaching back as far as Primary School, and supports the student in their personal development with the ultimate objective to help them towards a successful transition to post-16 education and/or training. Whilst the student might not cover the whole curriculum, staff work hard to gradually extend the programme and time commitment of the student, working toward externally recognised qualifications wherever and whenever possible. Students are also encouraged to work with external providers to extend their experiences and offer them opportunities in the field of work.

The Outreach Team offer a flexible approach to learning and personal development for pupils who, for various reasons are not able to attend school premises to access their education full-time.

‘Bridging the Gap’

  • Working with disaffected pupils and often complex cases, the Outreach Team bridges the gap between home and school.
  • The team aim to build relationships with pupils and parents/carers.
  • The team adopts a holistic approach to pupils’ needs, liaising with other professionals (e.g. social workers, YJS, CAMHS, Early Break, Early Intervention, IYYS, educational psychologists, EWO, family support workers, police, community nurses and others).
Some pupils may be in school part-time with a package of vocational opportunities which take place off-site whilst other pupils are educated part-time at home or offsite and may also access vocational options. Pupils who are supported in this group are classed as EOTAS (Education other than at school).
The Outreach Team work in partnership with organisations such as Brighter Futures, City West Training, Red Box Training, Sports School, City Wall, Changing Lives through Horses, Doggy Day Care and The School of Military, to combine academic study and vocational training, to ensure pupils achieve their potential and also gradually increase their time of engagement to positively impact on their transition to post 16 provision. With this objective in mind, where possible, pupils are helped to re-integrate into school or other group-working situations.
